Our sister site My Ugly Christmas Sweater has been donating ugly sweaters to service men and women overseas since 2009. This year, the team has taken it to the next level by donating 500 sweaters, twice as many as last year, through its Sweaters4Troops campaign.

My Ugly Christmas Sweater President Anne Marie Blackman first donated 20 sweaters to service members in Afghanistan in 2009, and since then the tradition has grown.

“Tacky sweater events offer some levity for troops who are away from family and friends during the holidays,” says Blackman.

Last year, soldiers at a base in Southeast Asia used their donation of 100 ugly sweaters to host a 5K race. They also enjoyed caroling and set up a digital photo booth to take pictures to share with family at home.

My Ugly Christmas Sweater will also include several new patriotic-themed snowman sweaters for the troops (below).
